Fouling of membranes by organic and bio-foulants is a major issue for water purification using membrane processes. Fouling results in reduced water permeability, and requires frequent cleaning of the membrane modules using aggressive chemical and mechanical conditions. To reduce fouling of membrane surfaces, we have developed novel polymers that can be grafted to form an ultra-thin antfifouling layer. Amine-functional water sol. polymers with a combination of PEO and zwitterionic side chains were synthesized using free radical polymerization that were crosslinked with trimesoyl chloride to afford hydrophilic antifouling coatings on UF membrane surfaces. The newly formed composite membranes have a potential application for water pre-treatment for RO and also for membrane bioreactors.
