Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., PRISM Membrane Group - Director of Operations and Technology

Education:

M.S. Chemical Engineering – North Carolina State University

B.S. Chemistry – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Currently at 31 years of membrane experience (and counting) in commercial gas separations applications, my interest in membranes started while in graduate school at NCSU.  Upon graduation in 1981, I was hired by Monsanto Company as a membrane product development engineer with responsibilities for pilot plant field testing, followed by assignments in commercial systems process design, commissioning and then into engineering management.  After the acquisition of the Monsanto (Permea) membrane business by Air Products in 1991, continued as global membrane product owner before assuming commercial responsibility for the PRISM Membranes Group in 2000 and finally taking on the membrane program director role in 2008.

Abstract:

Evolution of an Industry
Perspectives and Learnings since the Early Days of Gas Separation Membranes

The talk will provide some personal perspectives from a career in the gas separations membrane business, starting from the early development and commercial evolution of gas separation membranes up through today.  Drawing from over 30 years of industrial membrane experience, and sprinkled with a few personal anecdotes, topics to be covered will be the personal career challenges and rewards for a membrane engineer or scientist, some of the important milestones in our history, as well as observations regarding the technical issues encountered in industrial applications with the key learnings which are still important today.  In closing, guidance on the direction of the business and the needs and priorities of future product development work will be presented.
