This project seeks to characterize the application of hemodialysis and hemofiltration mixed-matrix membranes incorporating novel nanocellulosic derivatives. Current hemodialysis and hemofiltration cellulosic membranes experience a decrease in effectiveness due to membrane fouling over time. Hemodialysis and hemofiltration hollow fiber membrane modules made with nanocellulose possess properties effectively lowering fouling and improving membrane performance

Standard cellulose triacetate hemodialysis and hemofiltration modified with the novel nanocellulose derivatives possess a variety of improved characteristics including: increased hydrophilicity and tensile strength. Data from novel hemodialysis and hemofiltration cellulosic membranes have been examined and summarized for membrane transport, chemical and physical properties, as well as biocompatibility.
