In analyzing experimental seeded batch crystallizations, the crystal growth rate is usually obtained by a differential method, dividing the increase in crystal size by the short time interval. If an analytical solution for batch seeded crystallizations were available, a more accurate integral method (fitting the size and concentration profiles against the model) could be used. An analytical solution is given for the seeded non-nucleating batch crystallization of a material showing integer order growth kinetics when special Common History (CH) seed is used. Hence the integral method of growth parameter estimation may be used in these cases. The paper shows the derivation of the analytical solutions and describes application to example experiments on the growth of glucose monohydrate and the growth of sucrose crystals.
