The reduction of nitrobenzene (ArNO2) was investigated in a zero-valent iron system (Fe0)with the addition of ferrous ions (Fe2+) using batch tests. The results indicated that the reductive product of nitrobenzene was not changed with the addition of Fe2+, and ArNO2was reduced to aniline by Fe0. The reductive reaction rate of ArNO2was apparently enhanced due to the addition of Fe2+, however, Fe2+was not the major reducing agent. The reductive reaction can be described using a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the observed pseudo-first-order rate constants (kobs) increased with the increasing of Fe2+concentration, indicating that the presence of Fe2+ accelerated the reduction of ArNO2 by Fe0.
