Global worming and the drive to reduce carbon emissions is putting pressure on refineries and chemical plants to be more environmentally responsible. Environmental rules and regulations in the US are expected to change in order to encourage refiners to reduce their carbon emissions. This objective can be achieved by improving operational efficiency and making plant modifications that improve overall energy efficiently. .

Energy consumption in a refinery is a major cost and source of carbon emissions. Higher energy consumption reduces a refiner's income. Executing a well-organized and objective Energy Conservation Program reduces operating costs and improves refinery carbon emissions and income.

This paper discusses the steps to implement an Energy Conservation Program and how it can improve refinery operating costs and reduce carbon emissions. In conclusion, energy conservation increases profitability and reduces carbon emissions.
