THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY DESIGN ON NEW REFINARIES

The industrial safety designs as part of the set of documents required for the phases of basic and detailing design add value to the business resulting in several positive impacts on new refinaries. These impacts result in cost optimization and reduction of operational risks.

The cost optimization and risks reduction are achieved through a good development of safety designs which are considered indispensable in the scope of this discipline. They are: Fire and Gas Detection Design which includes the Toxic and Flammable Gases and Vapors Dispersion Study using the tool CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), Fireproofing Design, Area Classification Design and the General Safety Plan and all of them using Electronic Model and the generation of 3D views.

Along with the tools above mentioned, another important issue that deserves to be mentioned is the preparation of all technicals criterias which support these designs.

The aims of these four designs are described as folow: The Fire and Gas Detection Design aims to determine the coordinates of the axes x, y and z of the fire and gas detectors of the plant and thus increase the probability of detection reducing the response time of the spill or leakage scenario and defines what are the best detectors technologies to be adopted.

Fireproofing design aims to define the structures, support equipment, pipes and electrical circuits / instrumentation that should receive passive protection preventing its indiscriminate application and oversized.

The Area Classification design aims to define the areas which have the possibility of formation of explosive atmosphere in order to support the proper selection of equipment and systems to be installed in industrial units.

Finally the General Safety Plan aims to represent which devices are necessary to fight and prevent fires and gas/liquids leakages on the new refinarie units, such as deluge systems, fire and gas detectors and theirs technologies, the automatic and manual monitors and the best location of escape routes.
