Hydrodeoxygenation has been considered to be one of the most promising methods for bio-oil upgrading. Here, the catalytic performance of a newly developed hydrogenation catalyst, platinum supported on mesoporous ZSM-5 (Pt/MZSM-5), was tested in model bio-oil compounds hydrodeoxygenation. Pt/ZSM-5 and Pt/Al2O3 were used as reference. Three common bio-oil compounds with various oxygen contents and molecules sizes, guaiacol(GUA), cresol, and dibenzofuran(DBF), were used as model bio-oil compounds to evaluate the bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation on these three catalysts. Our results indicate that Pt supported on mesoporous ZSM-5 show better performance in bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation than Pt/ZSM-5 and Pt/Al2O3. The excellent catalytic performance is attributed to the combination of strong acidity and mesopore structure in mesoporous zeolite.
