INDUSTRY CONCERN

In 2006, the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) member companies elected to address the concern that the ranks of experienced process safety professionals were being depleted (via retirement and other means) and new engineers and process safety professionals taking their place did not have adequate training and experience to execute the process safety related work when replacing them.

CCPS RESPONSE

The response to this concern was the development and execution of an intensive 4-day course titled Process Safety Boot Camp (later renamed Foundations of Process Safety). Process Safety Boot Camp was designed specifically for companies wanting to educate chemical engineers, designers and operations personnel in the fundamentals of Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS). Since its launch, it has been widely used across different sectors of the chemical, petrochemical and food industries by companies of all sizes to ramp-up staff knowledge to a common level quickly and easily.

Each Process Safety Boot Camp is taught through the AICHE Academy (http://www.aiche.org/academy) by two of 22 process safety veterans with a minimum of 25 years’ experience at major companies from the process industries. The course is highly interactive and highlights the four pillars and 20 elements of Risk Based Process Safety areas including: Commitment to Process Safety, Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, Managing Risks and Learning from Experience.

EFFECT AND IMPACT

The first course was presented in 2010 in Mumbai, India and by the end of 2016, it is estimated that over 6,500 participants around the world will have attended approximately 200 boot camps.

More than 20 companies have conducted multiple Process Safety Boot Camps at their locations, many globally. Each company representative responsible for the execution of the courses was surveyed and interviewed to find out the effect and impact that they have seen within their organization and to be able to answer the question, “How has process safety boot camp affected your process safety performance and programs?” Findings and conclusions of the survey and interviews will be discussed, as well as the future of this game-changing product from CCPS and AIChE Academy.
