481483 Commercalize the Invisable Energy Source

Louis E. Herrington, LEHCO, Daphne, AL

There exist a quite large source of energy that is unnoticed by the community. It is an exempt source of energy. It is shipped from the US to foreign users. It contains large quantities of pollutants that are not acceptable in the United States but are never the less emitted to the same air we all enjoy. There is a relatively new patented technology now available to remove those impurities. This mostly unrecognized energy source is Petroleum Coke of the fuel variety. It is called Shot Coke because it is generated in the form of small 3 to 4 mm particles. It is packed into the holes of ships and shipped mainly to the Far East. Shot Coke containing 5.5 to 6 percent Sulfur and 2.5 percent Nitrogen, is generated from the dregs of the Crude Oil processed in all US Refineries. The foreign markets that utilize this fuel have weak environmental laws and are allowed to use these fuels. Such markets are beginning to tighten. Present shipments are about 500,000 barrels per day. That represents a very substantial part of the energy purchased as Crude Oil. If no action is taken there will be large piles of Petroleum Coke located at every US Refinery. This Paper will describe a patented process for removal of the Sulfur and Nitrogen. Carbon Dioxide from the coke in Refineries is exempted from prevailing energy laws. This is made necessary because of the necessity to generate fuel for transportation that sustains our economy. There are presently a large shortage of Low Sulfur Coke and niche markets can serve as a place to perfect the process in time to meet the fast approaching end to the shipment of high sulfur petroleum coke to foreign markets. The Desulfurizer Process will be described in this paper. Markets for the increased quantities of low sulfur coke will be grow and change as quantities increase. Initial uses will supply user such as the chemical industry where suffering exists due to the increasing levels of sulfur in coke supplies. Other users are in a similar fix. Subsequently industries who need a highly pure source of CO will begin to grow. Soon, a use for low sulfur coke will be the manufacture of high purity Hydrogen and many other products.
