Safety is a paramount part of every industry, because everyone desires a way of mitigating against potential mishaps. According to the Chemical Safety Board (CSB), there have been several accidents in many different institutions, from an accidental mercury poisoning that occurred at Dartmouth College in 1996, Chemical fire occurring at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2008, to the recent explosion at Texas Tech University (TTU) in 2010. This occurrence has increased the awareness of potential mishaps in universities laboratory and refocused the attention of safety experts in redeploying their efforts at mitigating laboratory accidents. This paper aims to understand the residual safety loopholes at universities and how to adequately prevent against more accidents in the laboratories. Also, with an additional focus on how to encourage a safety culture.
