Endoscopic Applications in Aesthetic Breast Surgery

Michael Romanelli, MD, Core Plastic Surgery, Birmingham, AL
Goals/Purpose: Endoscopic techniques in aesthetic breast surgery enhance visualization and surgical precision while minimizing visible scarring on the breast. This presentation will discuss the technical components of aesthetic breast surgery in a step-by-step fashion, reviewing key components of the surgical process vital to achieving consistent, ideal outcomes.

Methods/Technique: Endoscopic applications have been successfully utilized in many aesthetic breast procedures. Detailed videos and images will illuminate the anatomy and each step of the procedure.

Results/Complications: For breast augmentation, a transaxillary approach with endoscopic assistance facilitates precise implant placement and plane determination with saline, smooth silicone and Motiva smoothsilk implants. For treatment of the ptotic breast, augmentation-mastopexy via an endoscopic approach minimizes disruption to the breast tissue, preserving blood supply while lifting the breast. When faced with capsular contracture, endoscopy enables identification of degree of capsular contracture, as well as ability to perform subsequently indicated capsulotomy, capsulorrhaphy, or capsulectomy.

Conclusion: Endoscopic techniques represent a valuable tool in aesthetic breast surgery, offering a balance of precision, reduced morbidity, and superior cosmetic results. These methods present significant benefits by minimizing scarring, preserving blood supply, and improving patient satisfaction. Further advancements and training could broaden the applicability of endoscopic approaches in aesthetic breast procedures.
