Abstract

A crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating was deposited using gas tunnel plasma jet. Spraying was performed at different spray distance to investigate the effect of this parameter on the features of sprayed coatings. Microstructure, adhesion and microhardness of the resulting coatings were investigated. The results showed that the spray distance affect greatly microhardness, adhesion, and crystallinity of the sprayed HAp coatings. Microhardness value increased as the spray distance decreased, mainly due to the formation of dense coating with lower porosity. Adhesion increased as the spray distance decreases due to a good mechanical bonding between the first apatite layer and the substrate arising from the high droplets temperatures at short spray distance. X-ray diffraction patterns of HAp coatings referred to the formation of high crystalline apatite coating with short spray distance.
