Advancements in Quality & Productivity Grinding & Finishing Thermal Spray Coatings
Mr. Nicholas A. Orf and Scott W. Peterson, Abrasive Systems Div, 3M, Bldg 240, 3M Center, St Paul, MN 55144

Recent developments in grinding methods and superabrasive product technology have demonstrated improvements in productivity of over 40% on certain hydraulic components.  Quality specifications for surface roughness and geometry can be achieved in a predictable and repeatable process.  3M will review data generated on popular carbide thermal spray coatings on aerospace and heavy equipment components, where as-sprayed surfaces were processed to finish specifications of 4 µinch Ra or better and geometry specifications of +/- 0.00025”.  A new class of flexible Diamond abrasives designed for finishing wear resistant coatings will be described. Equipment requirements and operating parameters in production conditions will also be presented.
