Thermal spray coatings can be made of ceramics, metals or from mixture of both by several technologies, such as various plasma spray, HVOF, etc. Consequently, their fatigue properties will differ in dependency on the feedstock and on the technology used. Comparison was made of properties of Alumina, NiAl and composite coatings produced by gas and water stabilized plasma spray. Measured fatigue data were then related to a detailed structural characterization of the tested coatings. It has been found, for instance, that Alumina coatings made by WSP® substantially increased the fatigue life time compared to coatings of the same feedstock made by the commercial gas stabilized plasma. Results for other materials/technologies are discussed as well.
