Considerable work has been performed and published on the electrochemical behavior of nitinol under laboratory test conditions. Within the past five years, there has been a standardization of the test procedure used to predict corrosion behavior and characteristics, i.e., the development of ASTM F 2129 (“Conducting Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization Measurements to Determine the Corrosion Susceptibility of Small Implant Devices”). There are other alloys that are implanted besides nitinol, including, but not limited to cobalt-chromium, cobalt-nickel-chromium-molybdenum, stainless steel, platinum-iridium, and titanium. An assessment has been made comparing the results of all these alloys with regards to interpretation of the data generated utilizing the ASTM procedure. | ||
