This paper looks at the transformation of queer spaces in Mexico City. Since the 2000s Mexico City has been revitalizing many of its urban spaces. Among other neighborhoods, La Zona Rosa, which is historically associated with tourism and queer spaces, changed to include a “queer street.” Drawing on ethnographic interviews with women between 23 and 65 years old and the review of newspapers of record, I suggest that the transformation of urban spaces entailed a re-imagining of urban spaces as sexually diverse, yet re-inforcing fixed sexual identity categories in a context where sexual systems prescribed more fluid sexualities.
