One of the challenges of making a standing figure in clay is negotiating gravity. If the figure’s legs are not sturdy enough they will not support the rest of the body and it falls over. An experienced art educator, Linda Louis, shows images of how young adolescent girls circumvent this structural problem in order to preserve their media-driven assumptions about feminine beauty (specifically thin thighs), and discusses the pedagogical opportunities for changing the conversation.
