Session Abstract
This panel explores the various forms female confinement has taken throughout history. Spanning several centuries and three countries, the papers comprising this panel will encourage comparative theoretical discussion of the different ways in which female freedom had been limited by the state. Moreover, these papers suggest ways in which important social and political processes can be studied through attention to the confinement of specific female bodies. As a whole, this panel should stimulate a fruitful dialogue about the female body, the state, and incarceration.
