Session Abstract
This Birds of a Feather session will provide attendees with a platform to discuss graduate teaching. Many graduate students do not receive a lot of constructive advice on how become effective teachers. With the help of a our discussion leaders, graduate students and recent graduates will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss best practices for teaching in history. Possible topics include:
It is my first time teaching X topic, how do I prepare my syllabus?
How do you approach X topic when you teach?
How do you make your classes more enjoyable?
How do you handle teaching evaluations?
Differences between teaching seminars and teaching lectures
Balancing your teaching responsibilities alongside your graduate work
Methods for improving the way you teach
Expected Audience: The audience is expected to consist of graduate students and junior faculty who have recently graduated from their program. I estimate the audience to be at least 20 people.
