Session Abstract

In late 2015, the U.S. military announced the removal of all combat restrictions on women, and on February 2, 2016, the leaders of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps stated that they believed the time had come for women to register for selective service.  These changes promise to remake the nature of military service and the meaning of citizenship in the United States.  They also suggest the timely importance of the academic and interdisciplinary study of gender and conflict.

This roundtable proposes to consider the future of this study through a roundtable that brings together several scholars invested in the formation of a new peer-reviewed journal Gender & Conflict.  The journal will draw from the methodologies and questions of the humanities and social sciences to consider the ways gender has framed personal experiences, political negotiations, militarism, peace, and cultural expressions of conflict.  It is under review by Taylor & Francis and its prospects for securing a publisher in the near future are promising.  The editors should be actively soliciting contributions in 2017.

This roundtable would serve as a fruitful discussion platform for those interested in the study of the journal’s and the Women, Gender, and War track’s important topics.  Its editor, Kara Dixon Vuic, will moderate.  Panelists will include Associate Editor Laurie Stoff, and Editorial Board members Leisa D. Meyer, Beth Bailey, and Allison Fell.
