Session Abstract
Women migrants face particular challenges, explored by the papers in this panel. Lucia Carminati looks at the ways authorities in Port Said sought to control and regulate travellers and migrants in the nineteenth century city. Suyapa Portillo Villeda examines how the memory of the 1954 Honduran Banana Strike plays a powerful role in contemporary migrations and social movements. The final paper by Crystal Whetstone focuses on the role that labor NGOs play in China in promoting the rights of migrant women laborers.
