Session Abstract
This panel explores various contributions women have made to science that have largely been ignored or forgotten. This panel also addresses the way science, in its development and practice, is gendered. One of the papers uses the practice of midwifery to analyze the tension between religion and female bodies and sexuality. Another paper reflects upon the way the development of Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery was used to place different types of value on different female bodies. Another focuses on the history of plastic surgery to analyze the way gender played a role in the perceived legitimacy of the field. Also discussed are audiometry and blood clotting theories.
