Session Abstract
This panel uses a variety of topics including the suffrage movement, women’s presence in scientific education, illegal abortion clinics, diagnosis of gender dysphoria, and plant naming to explore the complicated relationship between gender and scientific authority during the 1800’s. Individual papers discuss various forms of resistance to rigid definitions of gender that excluded women from science, and pathologized "difficult women" and gender nonconformity.
