Session Abstract

This panel focuses on gender and enslavement in the Classical and Early Medieval worlds. Anise Strong discusses the role of enslaved women in Roman religious rituals. Chiara Sulprizio examines how much enslaved women’s sexual and reproductive autonomy challenged Roman legal strictures. After the fall of the Roman empire, enslaved labor continued, and Valerie Garver explores the evidence for the lives of unfree textile workers in the Carolingian world.
