Session Abstract

This panel discusses the role of gender and race in consumerism, work, and commodities. Women were not always thought of as power-holding consumers, but two of the works in this panel discuss women’s roles in the consumption of Japanese automobiles and the increased commodification of sexuality and pleasure. Two of the papers also take an intersectional approach to work and commodities by focusing on the trajectory of precarious work and the connection between the NAACP and energy policies in the 1970’s.
