Session Abstract
This panel focuses on three studies which examine the relationship between culture and the construction of gender. One analyzes the representation of women in the Hindi film industry, arguing that as Indian culture evolved, so too did the portrayal of women. This shift in representation is a reflection of socioeconomic changes that occurred in the country. The second examines how the popularity of television programming created a viewing culture that largely influenced the formation of Canadian gender, family, and national identities between 1945 and 1965. These cultural productions both informed and conformed to larger communal and nationalist identities of the time. The final paper focuses on two US dance companies to examine how they celebrated and performed an idealized version of womanhood on US government sponsored Cold War cultural tours.
