Session Abstract

This panel focuses on the ways in which neoliberal economic ideas influence the organization of women. One study analyzes how, in the midst of hard times, the women of the National Women's Committee of the Service Workers' Union in New Zealand kept the committee alive and built a solidarity that spanned globally, locally, and nationally. The second study explores the emerging alliances between art workers, architecture workers, and domestic workers who together turn the household, a place that reveals the gendered nature of the division of labour, spaces, and resources, into a site of activist research and political struggle. The third study examines the way advocates and opponents of neoliberal ideology deployed histories of women of color to advance their causes, each in strikingly different ways.
