Session Abstract
This panel focuses on ways people use the arts to heal, express, and unify in the face of adversity. The first study explores the way in which Native women (and men) in the United States are using and have used slam poetry, theatrical productions, and spoken word videos to advocate for greater legal protections for Native women under the Violence Against Women Act. The second study discusses the art project “She Paints Her Sky. Created in Bali, this project aims to become a platform for connecting voices of African and Asian women for sustainable peace by using art as a tool to empower women from within.
