Session Abstract

There is a fast moving and largely unrecognized human rights disaster across the region from the U.S. to Venezuela. Migrants, including substantial numbers of trafficked individuals, are often the targets of violence and are repeatedly denied human rights, including when they arrive to the U.S. Much of this is indirectly and directly impelled by U.S. policy and practices, and disproportionately affects women and children. This plenary proposes to bring together a distinguished group of scholars and activists to discuss the human rights disaster in the Americas. It will pay special attention to the structural, political, economic, security, and cultural causes of this situation, as well as its impact on migrants in the region. The session brings together cutting-edge research and activism dedicated to addressing these injustices. Why hasn’t this crisis been higher on the agenda of major feminist organizations? How does it threaten the well-being of women, specifically?
