Session Abstract

Holly Hughes is a writer and performer. She launched her career at the Lower East Side’s infamous petri dish for feminist and queer culture, the WOW Cafe. She’s the author of CLIT NOTES: A Sapphic Sampler (Grove Press), and co-editor of O SOLO HOMO: The New Queer Performance (Grove, with David Roman), ANIMAL ACTS: Performing Species Today (University of Michigan, with Una Chaudhuri); and MEMORIES OF THE REVOLUTION: The First Ten Years of the WOW Cafe, (University of Michigan Press, with Jill Dolan and Carmelita Tropicana). Her work has been presented internationally at a variety of venues, earning both ire from the religious right and accolades. She has received funding from the NEA, NYSCA, the Creative Capital MAP Fund and is a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow. In 2018 she’ll premiere a new solo commissioned by the Lumberyard, YOU, OF ALL PEOPLE, at NYLA. She is a Professor in the Penny W Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan where she directs the BFA in Interarts Performance.
