U.S. art schools maintain a growing number of international students, many of which are non-native English speakers. These students often get lost navigating the fast-paced discussion formats employed in critiques and seminars. To assist in inclusion, alternative approaches to discussion can help students gain confidence and agency in their classroom community. In this presentation, I will introduce a variety of low-prep discussion techniques based on TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) methods that can be used both with native and non-native English speakers alike.
