The Tool Book Project is an artist-led multi-modal art and social justice project that asks what the global political climate requires of artists today and if there is a way for our current practices to have a viable social and political impact. The project began just after the 2016 election, as a way to exchange images and ideas that might edify, inspire, support and radicalize artist communities, and provide a way for artists to contribute to positive social change using their current practices. Each “Tool Book” is centered around a “publication” that showcases artwork and writing. It is also a platform for sharing resources via readings, roundtable discussions, gallery shows and other public events that engage with communities. Sales from publications are donated to social and environmental justice organizations, providing a mode of direct action for participants. “Volume One: Tool Book” was sourced from an open call and included over 40 international artists and writers. “Volume Two: Tool Box”, is a limited edition handmade box that contains editioned artworks from five artists working across the continental US and Puerto Rico who react to the global and personal devastation of climate change. Artworks range from a series of artist-made ritual cards that guide viewers through the stages of “any imminent disaster” to a screen-printed manifesto for “La Mujer Maravilla” and playful ceramic vessels. The third volume, a risograph print collection by artists responding to labor histories and practices, will be published in Fall 2019.
