Exploiting the slippage between the real and the fictive, my sculpture and video works explore issues of gender, power, and complicity, through the use of humor and kitsch. Frequently my works highlight trade-offs of power—some willing, others coerced—revealing our conflicted relationship to power.
Within my work, the gesture of incomplete drag is an attempt to acquire power through proximity. However, my awkward male critic (or curator) drag reveals that I’m not up to the task. The clumsy attempts at drag explore the edges of failure, as they invoke critique through parody. In a recent museum talk based performance, Saltz for Kelley I performed as Jerry/Carrie, a failed drag version of Jerry Saltz. A continued investigation of this work will take place via this conference panel-based performance.
