How to care for something that’s not yours: The impossibility of the Commons

Thinking through recent projects developed individually or as part of a collective, I will speak about the southern periphery of Karachi's urban sprawl, gently growing its houses and gardens into the sea. Here, middle-class and upscale suburbs of the city inch into the commons, into the free public beaches of Seaview and Clifton. The city collectively gives way to images of Dubai and Singapore. Yet, it never quite becomes the images it so wants to be.
Is it possible to imagine a commons within the unrequited architectures of aspiration...is it impossible to be a multiplicity, within the age of individuals?
