Painting Pedagogy in DIY Times

How do students study painting today? In our DIY culture, where YouTube videos demonstrate any task and Instagram holds our student’s attention, how does this impact the way students learn in the studio? As painting constantly redefines itself and enlarges its opportunities in and through other media, is this reflected in current painting pedagogy? How does painting’s historical privilege, it’s exclusionary history and its promotion of the individual artist engage, challenge or exclude our current students? Is there room for the slowly developed skills of painting in the evolving interdisciplinary curriculum of art schools? This panel will present an in-depth examination of contemporary painting pedagogy at a range of institutions.
