knowledges: artistic practice as method

Affiliated Society or Committee Name: Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities
This panel explores artistic practice as a method of knowledge production. The panel’s title, “knowledges,” is lowercase and plural to underscore that knowledge is produced on multiple registers, from seminar spaces to post-studio practices and the daily negotiations and politics of everyday life. When forms of knowledge go unexamined, however, their historical and political perspectives can get smuggled in and naturalized. Academic forms are not neutral vessels and should, therefore, be the subject of critical evaluation as much as content. Since artists are trained from the outset to be critical of form, they might have something to offer researchers in more discrete disciplines and fields. This first part of a two-part panel looks specifically at artistic practices in pedagogy, photography, artist writing, and activism.
