Latin American Art from/in Canada: Challenging and Expanding Narratives and Territories

Affiliated Society or Committee Name: American Society for Hispanic Art Historical Studies
In search of an accurate comprehension of Latin American art and artists operating outside of their traditional geographical edges, this session solicits presentations delving into the presence of Latin American art and artists in Canada and the emergence of a Latino Canadian art scene. We understand Latin America, in a broad sense, including Mexico, Central and South America and Caribbean countries having experienced a colonization process driven by Spain and Portugal.

According to art critics and curators such as Gerardo Mosquera, Mari Carmen Ramirez, and Benjamin Genocchio, the term “Latino” seems to encompass the populations of North Americans of Latin American origin. Yet, Canada is often excluded from the discourse, as if North America did not include any territories north of the United States.

We intend to challenge the traditional geographical territories of the Latino, Latin American and Ibero-American art history to encourage the inclusion of the Canadian art scene. This shall allow us to grasp what it means today to define something as Latin American art or someone as a Latin American or Latinx artist beyond solely the latter’s birthplace or origin.

This session invites contributions on the following topics: Art initiatives that foster exchange between Latin America, the United States, and Canada; Exhibitions and curatorial and collecting strategies across Canada focusing on Latin American and Latino (Canadian) arts and artists; Latino Canadian arts’ features and aesthetics; Teaching Latino, Latin American or Ibero-American art history in Canada: major challenges and future avenues.
