Early Modern Animation: Mascarades, Ballet, Automata

Affiliated Society or Committee Name: Renaissance Society of America
Exploring diverse forms of bodily animation, this session highlights the dynamics of mobility and the spaces it activated. The movement of bodies remediated artistic mediums and personages in the château; it set things in motion across geographies in performances at court; and it conjoined nature and machines in gardens. Papers highlight some of the potential and transformative dimensions—political and scientific—of animation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
