Black and Latinx Arts: Radical Solidarity and Racial Intersections
Affiliated Society or Committee Name: US Latinx Art ForumParticipants in this panel reflect on the rich histories and shared practices between African American and Latinx artists since the 1960s. Scholars like Kellie Jones and Karen Mary Davalos have researched and recorded the groundbreaking creative cultures of the Black Arts and the Chicanx Art Movements respectively. The artistic collaborations that have taken place between these movements have too often been neglected as they fall at the intersection of Black and Latinx communities. This intersection is a unique strength and important point of historical and artistic connection. Presentations will explore a range of such projects and practices including muralism, performance art and arts activism that historically aggrieved people of color have used collaboratively to consolidate and advance cultural and artistic capital within a competitive and economically driven art world. We seek presenters from diverse backgrounds who can expand and enrich this already dynamic discussion with their knowledge.
