Black, Brown + Latinx Graphic Design Educators
In Black, Brown + Latinx Graphic Design Educators: Experiences and Reflections, designer and educator, Kelly Walters, invites black, brown and latinx graphic design educators to share reflections on how their identity or race influences their teaching and design practice. This session is focused on fostering a dialogue around the specific concerns, methods, observations of black, brown and latinx design educators from:
– Private art and design schools, colleges or liberal arts institutions (majority international students)
– Public art and design programs at universities or community colleges (majority domestic students)
– Minority serving institutions
– Historically black colleges and universities
– Predominantly white institutions
We invite you to submit proposals that address this topic in response to the following areas:
– What are your experiences in design education?
– How has your identity influenced the way you teach graphic design?
– What are the challenges/successes of teaching graphic design at a minority serving institution or HBCU?
– What guides the visual and material choices for your students?
– In what ways does your design curriculum explore imagery, typography, color or pattern informed by black, brown and latinx cultures?
– Based on your student population, what are the professional, social, environmental, etc. factors that guide where students aspire to work or learn graphic design?
We aim to have two panel discussions that engage these questions with various faculty and allow for an open Q&A that will engage the audience. A design publication will be created that highlights the discussion generated by these panels.
