Fashion as Power and Protection

Fashion as Power and Protection

This panel seeks to extend and elucidate an ongoing conversation being had by three fashion and design scholars whose work and practices share the common themes of power and protection as a utility of costume. The 90-minute format with be broken up into 3 main sections (Camouflage, Commemoration, and Community) with each presenter both introducing one area and presenting their research in the other two related areas with dynamic visual aids, culminating in mini group discussions between each themed section guided in part by audience-interactive materials and question prompts. As women centering feminine concerns (both historic and modern) within fashion, we hope to engage the audience in our research to expand and thoughtfully challenge its scope. What better way to center women in fashion than framing it within the kind of conversations women have together to make sense of our world and support one another? These tête-à-têtes always reveal some truth about ourselves, but with our consent and on our turf. We hope to invite the audience into this intimate space.
