Diversity and Inclusivity in CAA: Moving Forward

Faculty Diversity: A Way Forward

Before the workshop:

-- Read two links provided to prep for workshop (Post article and Handbook)

During the workshop:

-- 15-20 min. ppt. presentation introduction with background, information, statistics, statement of the problem, and current situation regarding inclusive hiring. Give participants the background and rely on their intelligence and creativity of CAA members to help solve this pressing problem. Inform group participants of the past two workshops and the implemented action plan and survey results.

--break-out into groups (4-5 people form a circle for each group).

-- Pose a thought exercise: "Imagine what an ideal department will look like eight to ten years from now. A best-case scenario is what we are looking for. It need not be practical as of today, just envision it."

--Have the participants brainstorm how to get to where we want to be from where we are now (especially considering the state of affairs as presented in the introduction)

--To achieve the solutions, action steps are proposed from each group and written down on large post-it notes and markers.

-- Facilitators look for commonalities in the proposals to aid the process of inclusive faculty hires. All participants can see the various proposals from each group and are instructed that they will receive an email regarding “next steps.”

After the workshop:

-- synthesize results and redistribute to participants with next steps.

Supplies needed: very large post its and black markers. For the room we need a projector, cord, and a podium for projector for the first 15-20 minutes.
