Creative Legacies: Preparing Artists for the Future
Affiliated Society or Committee Name: ARTspaceWill your work be archived, stored, maintained, donated and conserved? Will you turn your studio or home into a study center? Will there be finances in place to ensure your work and property are protected? Who will you leave in charge of your artistic legacy? How can you and your heirs benefit from forward planning?
This workshop will focus on those often overlooked nuances of legacy planning for artists. Our presentation will begin with short case studies which have been a result of our working with living artists as well as estates, heirs, and executors. We will then move on to discuss the legal (including IP), financial, material, promotional, and scholarly issues that an artist should consider when planning for the future of their creative legacy. We will introduce the various free resources available through organizations, websites and publications as well as when you need to consult professional or legal counsel.
A significant portion of the session’s time will be set aside to address the participants questions and special scenarios such as how does one deal with non-traditional materials, digital media, performance, licensing and copyright.
