From Knowledge to Data in Art History

Affiliated Society or Committee Name: Digital Art History Society
This workshop will begin with a discussion of data basics, working through established projects as examples. Participants will then walk through a discussion of data discovery, structuring, cleaning, and finally visualization. Certain platforms and software packages will be introduced through the course of the workshop, including the data cleaning tool OpenRefine and the data analysis software Tableau. A sample dataset will be provided for the group to work with. All registered participants will be sent details about how to obtain a trial version of the software before the start of the workshop. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants should have an understanding of how to build datasets that are relevant for their own research programs and how to generate basic visualizations and maps from them. The workshop leaders request two screens and two separate inputs so that they can show a powerpoint presentation, along with a live software demonstration. If it is possible for the workshop to extend beyond an hour that would be ideal.
