Preparing an Essay for Publication: Strategies for Writing from and about the Global Margins
Workshop Description:
This workshop, led by editors of the MIT Press journal ARTMargins, will provide an introduction to the complex world of peer-reviewed academic publishing. Editors will explain the publication process and share strategies for the preparation and submission of work especially concerned with the global margins. We will consider how to make claims for significance from the vantage point of non-canonical fields, and methodological strategies for global art histories. A 30 minute presentation by ARTMargins editors will be followed by a 30 minute Q & A session with participants to address individual questions and concerns.
Overview: Stages of the Process (Presentation by ARTMargins editors)
- Having a Paper Worth Submitting – Where to Start. Understanding distinctions between a course paper, a conference presentation, an MA thesis, or a dissertation chapter.
- Selecting a Journal: How to find an appropriate journal for your work. Differences between disciplinary journals, regional journals, interdisciplinary journals, online vs. print, etc.
- Revising for the Chosen Journal: understanding types of articles and formats, instructions for authors, what to put in a cover letter, revising argument and structure for a specific journal, positioning your work in relation to the field.
- Submission: Protocols for submission, corresponding with editors, cover-letter guidelines, submission ethics, understanding peer review, types of responses, what it means to “revise and resubmit,” images and permissions.
Workshop Q & A session and discussion (30 mins).
