Revolution in the Classroom

Hinging upon three experimental publications in the field of design education, David Reinfurt, Shannon Harvey, and Ellen Lupton will discuss how pedagogical, editorial, and design methodologies come together to make an integrated whole. The panel will focus on experimental processes for developing books as teaching tools, analyzing publications developed in an academic setting, and then extended and reframed to appeal to broader audiences. These publications were created following experimental approaches, with the common intent of bringing design into the liberal arts and vice versa.

A *New* Program for Graphic Design (2019) An experiment in book making, this publication is an edited transcription of a 3-day lecture held by David Reinfurt. During the lecture, Reinfurt condensed his curriculum taught at Princeton University, providing a broad and comprehensive introduction to the field for students coming from a range of other disciplines. These courses—Typography, Gestalt, and Interface—are the foundation of this book.

Blueprint for Counter Education (1970), is one of the defining works of radical pedagogy of the Vietnam War era. The book was a transcription of blackboard markings, which were edited and designed into a published volume. The book is accompanied by large graphic posters that could serve as a portable learning environment for a new process-based model of education.

Extra Bold (2020), is a feminist, inclusive, subversive, non-binary guide for graphic design. In this new publication, Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Tobias mix theory, self-help, and first-person narrative to address histories, users, and voices overlooked in standard accounts of the profession.
