Georgia, the largest state east of the Mississippi River, is naturally divided into 5 topographic and geologic provinces, from northwest to southeast: the Cumberland Plateau, Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains. Most of these provinces are separated by faults or fault zones. The Cumberland Plateau province is separated by topography from the Valley and Ridge province; the Valley and Ridge province is separated from the Blue Ridge by the Cartersville fault/fault zone; the Blue Ridge is separated from the Piedmont by the Brevard fault zone, and the Coastal PlainS overlie the Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge, and Piedmont on a major unconformity.
