A central problem of ecology is to identify which environmental factors most strongly influence patterns of species diversity in natural communities. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that variation in soil depth contributes to plant species richness on cedar glades in central Tennessee. Prior studies have discovered soil depth influences on species richness in similar environments. Preliminary results do not reveal a relationship between soil depth variation and plant species richness. Additional studies examining cedar glades will further our understanding of the relationship between plant and soil communities.
