DAVIDSON, Jane P., Art Dept., University of Nevada, Reno, Art 224, Reno, NV 89557, jdhexen@unr.edu

Julia Cope Collins was the only child of Edward Drinker Cope. This paper examines Cope's efforts to educate his daughter in the sciences, especially paleontology, in both formal and informal ways. The nineteenth-century models for and attitudes concerning a woman's education in paleontology are discussed. Julia Cope Collins' role in fostering the continuance of her father's research and her role in the development of the history of paleontology are also discussed.
